The Cock and the Jewel

Once upon a time, a Rooster was happily scratching and digging around to find some food for himself and his family

when he suddenly uncovered a special gem that someone had lost.

“Hooray!” exclaimed the Rooster. “You must be very expensive, and the person who lost you would probably want you back a lot.

But for me, I’d prefer a tiny piece of barley over all the fancy jewels in the whole wide world.”

Sometimes, really special things don’t mean much to those who don’t understand their worth.

Moral of the story

Value what you have: Sometimes, the things you already have are more important than something shiny and new.
Understand the worth: Don’t overlook the true value of something just because it doesn’t seem fancy.

Questions for the children

  1. Can you think of something you have that might be more important than a shiny toy or a fancy gadget?
  2. Why do you think the Rooster preferred a grain of barley over the precious jewel?

Post Note: This story is based on Aesop’s fable, written around 600 BC. In this retelling, we’ve used simpler words to make the story easier for young readers to understand.
